ELKINS, MULLOY, SPROGELL posted by Mary M. Andrews on Thursday, October 15, 1998

My father's paternal grandmother was Margaret L. Sprogell. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, in November 1857. Her parents were Marshall David (1830- abt 1875) and Rosanna Elkins Sprogell (1831- abt 1920). She grew up and was married in Philadelphia (about 1880) to Samuel Mulloy (1852-1951). Margaret died in Passaic, NJ, (Aug.1902) and is buried in the Sprogell family plot in Philadelphia.
Samuel Mulloy lived in Philadelphia with his parents, Louis and Sarah Flooks Mulloy, and three siblings: George (1850-?), Henry (1860-?), and Mary (1867-?), after the Civil War. Before the War the Mulloy family lived in the Wilmington/Philadelphia area. During the War they lived in Virginia. Louis was a seaman all his life and was lost at sea around 1875, while living in Philadelphia. I don't know what became of the rest of the family (Sarah, George, Henry, and Mary) after 1875. Samuel married Margaret Sprogell and lived in three States (New York, New Jersey, and Florida) between 1880 and 1951. He died in Florida and is buried there.

The surnames of WILSON and HAINES are related family (cousins) in George's line. I have several more surnames, which I have not listed for all the children above. BIXLER, SCHACKE, SHOCKEY posted by Carole Shockey on Thursday, October 15, 1998

Hello, I am just beginning to look into my family roots in PA. I have some info indicating my first ancestor Johan Christofel Schacke AKA Chris Shockey, came to Philadelphia in 1737. His son Valentine Shockey was the line that I'm trying to trace. Valentine married Barbara Bixler in York country around 1850? I believe Valentine and Barbara were born around 1736,7,8,9? Toward the end of the 1700's and beginning of 1800 the family moved to Hampshire, VA WVA. I have a source that leads me to believe Valentine may have been the black sheep of the family. I also understand the original land grant of Chris Shockey of 1820 acres was divided between PA and Frederick Co. in MD. Since Valentine is the oldest of the children born to Chris and Barbara Shockey, it has been hard to trace him. I can pretty much trace the family from Jobe A. Shockey who was my ggrandfather. Anything before is pretty hard to come by. I would be glad to share whatever info I have. Your assistance greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ADAMS, BARNES, JONES, RICKARD, TAYLOR, WALSH, WELCH, WELSH, WHITTAKER posted by Norma C. Leach on Thursday, October 15, 1998

I am still looking for the RICKARD family-JONES family-ADAMS family- the TAYLOR family. These families are intermarried and would have been located in Blockley, Philadelphia Cty. (now West Phila also known as Hestonville, I believe). The BARNES family-WHITTAKER family-WELSH (Welch-or Walsh) also from the same area in the 1800-1900's era. George B. Rickard was my grandfather and my grandmother was Anna Jane Jones. GGF was Albert Taylor Jones and GGGf was Daniel Jones who were yarnspinners in 1890 and had a business at Hunters Lane n 54th Street. A Whittaker family lived on 1500 block N. Peach Street where Daniel Jones owned some properties. It is my understanding that these families were intertwined through the years. The Jones family lived in the 1500 blk of N. 54th Street and the Rickard family lived in the same area. My paternal GF was Francis (Frank) Joseph Barnes who I was told was the son of ? Barnes and Whittaker and my GM was the WALSH (ETC).
Any information I could be afforded would be helpful as I am now 70 yrs of age and I would like to complete this family tree for my grandchildren and great grandchildren.

BOORAEM, KIDD, ROLL posted by Robin Chalmers on Thursday, October 15, 1998

Some researchers have listed Easton, PA, as the birthplace of Lucinda KIDD (1832-1902) who married Jonathan Smith ROLL (1828-1904). Lucinda is the daughter of John KIDD (1813-1875) and Siche Maria BOORAEM (1813-1859), who lived mostly in Elizabeth, NJ. I recently came across a bio of William C Kidd (b. 1889 in Philadelphia, PA) in "South Jersey: A History 1664-1924" editor Alfred M Heston. It states "Mr Kidd is of Scotch-Irish ancestry. The first of his family came to this country in 1778, and settled in Easton, PA, where Mr Kidd's great-grandfather was the owner of the Easton Iron Works." Although it gives no name for this great-grandfather, William C Kidd was the son of Benjamin L Kidd, grandson of William R Kidd. I've also seen references to other Kidds from Philadelphia who were ferry boat men, just like my John Kidd (1813-1875). Any help appreciated! Thanks!

- ELS, Heinz Bernhardt, b. 1912 near Berlin, Germany. Came to US with parents (George and Elsbeth) in 1924 or 1926. Older brothers, Werner and Gerhardt, were already in US. I believe they came a couple of years earlier to stay with HOFFMAN family. I am unsure of the family connection.
- ELS, George C. (his dad), b. 1878, d. 1962. He operated a barber shop in Olney. I know little else but have requested SS-5.
- SCHMIDT, Elsbeth S. (his mom). I have no vital information.

FROHSIN posted by Sidney Salinger on Thursday, October 15, 1998

Searching for information on my grandmother, AMANDA FROHSIN, born in 1867, probably in Philadelphia. She WAS married in Philadelphia on December 25, 1888, to my grandfather, Louis ROSENBAUM, and lived all of her married life in Kalamazoo, Michigan until her death in 1944. Her marriage certificate was witnessed by her brother, Jonas Frohsin, and by Samuel SNELLENBURG. (Amanda's second brother, Samuel Frohsin, was married to Luella Snellenburg...believed to be the sister of Samuel Snellenburg.) Amanda was the daughter of Louis Frohsin (born in Germany; many or may not have come to America) and Helene NEUSTADT. Nothing further is known of this family or descendants...other than Amands's descendants.
There is a fairly large family of Frohsins currently living in the U.S., mostly in the South; I have been in contact with many of then. Most or all of them seem to be related to one another...however, we have not been able to establish a connection with my family.
That family's contemporary ancestor to my great-grandfather, Louis Frohsin, was an Abraham Frohsin, who was born in Brakel, Germany He had three sons, Isaac ("Ike"), born in 1865 (who came to the U.S. in 1887, and is known to have honeymooned in Philadelphia); Abe (who went into the wholesale liquor business in Philadelphia); and Jonas (who went into the mercantile business in Atlanta).
The coincidences of the name Jonas in the same generation, the Germany and Philadelphia connections, and the concurrence of dates strongly suggest a relationship - perhaps that my great-grandfather, Louis Frohsin, and the progenitor of the current U.S. family, Abraham Frohsin, were brothers. However, we have been unable to ascertain that.
Any assistance or information available toward the "closing of the loop" will be greatly appreciated...both by myself and my maternal relatives, and by the current Frohsin family. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
