HANLON, Thomas D.former executive director of the Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, died Monday in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 69.Hanlon served as head of the bureau from 1970 to 1986 and, in the ?70s, Hanlon created a highly successful advertising campaign that he labeled "P.S. I Love You" -- tying the endeavor to the title of a hit single recorded by the Beatles. Hanlon came to the Palm Springs bureau in 1967 to fill the position of director of advertising, publicity and promotion. He was elevated to executive director three years later. Hanlon worked for the Clark County Fair and Recreation Board, a marketing agency for visitors to Las Vegas. In an interview with The Desert Sun in 1985, Hanlon described tourism as a commodity, adding that "selling Palm Springs is not unlike selling a can of peas." "It?s an analytical approach," he said at the time. "You define the product, identify who wants it, then figure out how to reach the buyers. "And, with Hanlon in the driver's seat, the bureau successfully utilized an annual budget of $1.6 million and steered a marketing strategy that centered on advertising, promotion, public relations and direct sales. A native of Philadelphia, Hanlon served in the Army with the 508th Airborne Forces and also was a Hearst Fellow graduate of the Maryland School of Journalism. He also one of the first tourism industry executives to receive a master's degree in Tourism Development and Administration from George Washington University. Hanlon is survived by his wife, Aura Nell; four daughters, Tenley, Megan Akright, Kara Arnold and Erin; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be private, with Wiefels and Son Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Northeast Catholic Boys? High School in Philadelphia.
